Pandora blocked – Opportunity for a local operator?

Who’d have guessed the lid would be closed on the Pandora’s box. This is a SAD, SAD thing.

Pandora Internet Radio
We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for most listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative.

We’ve sent the Pandora people the contact details for SAMRO, the south African Music Rights Organisation:, but I can’t say I’m holding my breath, given how small a share of the market we must be :-(

Perhaps this is an opportunity for a local entrepreneur or dev company to step in and either license the Music Genome project’s technology, or better yet, to roll our own.

So back to paid internet radio I guess. Only, the fact that I can’t seem to get DI.FM working does have me a little concerned :-!

  1. Thanks for posting on this subject. It’s really hard to read these letters. So much great music in South Africa. Appreciate your addressing the issue. Unfortunately, this is not just an issue for Pandora. There is NO license available for anyone wanting to stream webcasts in any country outside the US. There’s literally no way to stream legally right now. Hopefully, a global licensing structure will come soon. We’ve been working hard on finding a solution for a year now. Some good progess being made in the UK.

    Cheers. Tim (Founder, Pandora)
