A happy year end, and a good year ahead to everyone.

Question to South African graphic designers: What are the best applications to do the hinting of a font in? Who locally does hinting and what are typical rates?
I am grateful for the last year and everything it brought. Not that I particularly liked all of it, pfizer some of the challenges the year produced, allergy particularly in one critical work relationship left a bit of a sour aftertaste. But in the long-run such titbits become, drugs when lightly doused with a touch of creative philosophy, useful quality control experiences. Nothing quite like a little discord, to illuminate the fragile parameters of- and the importance of-, coherence, ethically and organisationally.

Béo is just over 8kg now, not bad for just over four months. Looks like we have a thrush infection (Candidiasis) to deal with again, :- ( Sleeping pattern has gone for a ball of wax, think all three of us now have rings under our eyes and not from seasonal festivities or indulgences. (Just got barrage of homeopathic remedies from Mary, everyone is already feeling better. I fact Béo gave me his critical approval of at least the first half of U2′s H.T.D.A.B) I wish there was a way to put across in words the really amazing and wonderful stuff, perhaps impossible, at least with my meagre command of the English language. Let’s just say life rocks.

In which-ever way you plan to, celebrate the end of this year, the beginning of 2006, both or neither, may our transition into 2006 mark a journey into a time space of significance, everyday elegance, and intimate truth.

The soft Technology of Intelligence

open source virus
overview of recent South African Inteligence history
Is there a difference between Intelligence Technology and Information Technology? Obviously there is, pharmacy a subtle difference but an important difference none the less.

Intelligence can be seen to stand in the kind of relationship to Information, as Information stands to Data, a more complex higher order of complexity of the same stuff, but a different thing.

Data is processed in relation to specific elements of signification to yield more valuable kind of data, information, that is in an ideal world more meaningful, more manageable and more comprehensible, or more salutogenic than the nitty gritty facts and figures of data.

The boundaries between what is data, what information, and what intelligence are vague subjective abstractions, but what connects them is technology.

Technology embodies quite a spectrum itself though, on the one side of technology it is often identified with cultural, scientific and industrial equipment, the devices through which we extend our abilities to tinker with and challenge our situation, from a shaped shard of flint employed in some primitive ingenuity of survival, through to fascinating monstrosities of engineering and resources we launch into the incredible deep space of extraterrestrial explorative indulgence.

The other side of technology is the ‘soft’ side, is the side of cognisance, of tactics, strategy and ultimately intelligence.

eyespySA update log001

“I’ve made some changes to the EYESPY disclaimer-help page. Some of these changes are noted in the code of the page.

An interesting related discussion to note is at 419legal.org, a SAPS related online forum concerned about scams…”

Some ideas, perhaps to accommodate a leisurely cup of coffee?
Ideas emerging for me regarding the site at the moment concern the commodity
value and characteristics of Intelligence in a general sense, specifically
personal and public aspects involving security and accountability (FOI, as
highlighted in the diclaimer-help link) being a potentially potent marketing
premise). These seem relevant to the release of a contact number via the site
and related advertising, and I imagine this will have strategic implications
for the EYESPY identity, credibility and its growth.” (If EYESPY were to choose to aim at capitalising on it)

Interesting moral issues involved in this one. Is it an invasion of privacy? Perhaps, neurosurgeon immoral? I don’t think so. Legal? I’m not qualified to judge on that but I can’t see why it shouldn’t be – information is a commodity, isn’t it?

Binary Film Works : 21st century cinema
Pieter, Gary and co. Binary Film Works, have done some really great film-noir work on the series! I am intensely gratified and pleased to be involved, and proud to be associated with this. Also a bit shocked at how incredibly enjoyable this is, especially in view of my concerns over the ethical aspects of the challenge of advertising.

There is something inherently pornographic about the whole business, I mean pornographic in the semantic sense of the term, not just porn or porno, but real sensational candid-ness behind the gloomy cloak and dagger stuff. Go figure, very little is as it seems at a glance.
