I have uploaded a diagram of the conceptual framework for Media Design Technology. I started compiling this in 2003 when I still had a fair amount of input in (and enthusiasm for) what we covered in the course. Since the take-over of Allenby by Damelin everything has been bureaucratised in an attempt to standardise. I did offer quite a bit of input when the new course was compiled, and some of it made it into the new course outlines.
My suggestion for the course name made it through, mostly… I suggested Media Design Technology, which was modified by the higher powers to ‘Media Design and Technologies’.
The new course however, is ‘Further Education and Training’ (F.E.T.) as opposed to Higher Education (H.E.) meaning it is predominantly technically orientated, focusing mainly on practical skills, which does have its merits. The danger of this approach, me thinks, is that students may not be being prepared to become anything more than point-and-click operators.
